BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is most common cancer among women globally. India comes first on the list, globally, for the most number of cases. In India, With more than one lakh cases every year, breast cancer has overtaken cervical cancer in number of cases. Breast cancer is disease in which breast cell grows abnormally and out of control and form lumps like tumor. It begins in milk duct. If it is left unchecked, It can spread throughout the body.

Initially, it is not life threatening and but after becoming invasive in tissues ,It spread to nearby nodes and become life threatening. 99% cases of breast cancer occur in women. Both women and men can develop breast cancer, although It is uncommon in men.

CAUSES OF BREAST CANCER

The exact reason of the most of breast cancer is not known. But, different researches have shown things that increases the cell abnormal growth. These are
• Obesity,
• Drinking Excessive alcohol
• Family history
• Tobacco use,
• Not doing enough physical activity,
• Starting of period before 12 years of age
• With increase in age

Sign and Symptoms

• Change in size and shape of breast,
• Change in size and shape of nipples
• Discomfort and swelling in armpits,
• Persistent pain in breast.
• Any lumps or thickening in breast, often without pain,
• Dimpling or redness in and around breast,
• Sore or discharge in nipples
If Any of the above symptoms is seen, medical care should be sought.
Most of the lumps are not cancerous.

Diagnosis

If any of the symptoms are present, doctor will do physical examination and ask for
• Mammogram- a low dose X-ray that can find any changes in the breasts
• Ultrasound- a scan ,
• Biopsy- If suspected some thing unusual, some breast tissue is taken for examination in laboratory.
• Additional scan such CT scan or MRI scan can also be done by doctors
Early detection is crucial, otherwise there is chances that Breast cancer can spread to other organs like lungs ,liver brain and bones.Once they reach to other site ,Other symptoms will start to appear.

Treatment

Treatment for breast cancer depend upon individual to individual and how much it has spread in breast or outside breast. It involves

• Staging – In this, size of cancer is assessed and CT scan of chest ,liver ,bone and other organ are done.
• Chemotherapy- it helps to shrink cancer before surgery,
• Surgery, removal of tumor,
• If just cancerous tissue is removed then ,it is lumpectomy,
• It whole breast is removed, then it is called mastectomy
• Radiation therapy is given to treat microscopic cancer and minimize the chances of recurring.
• Other treatments like hormone therapy and targeted therapy are given.
During treatment or post treatment some side effect of hair losses,nerve pain, depression, hormone changes can be seen.

Prevention

There is no such method known that can prevent breast cancer. But, to reduce its risk a healthy life style is recommended
• Low alcohol consumption,
• Managing healthy weight,
• Good and adequate sleep,
• Doing regular physical activities and exercise,
• Avoid sedentary lifestyle,
• Eating healthy and balanced diet.

Awareness among women is necessary for regular checkups. Early stage detection and treatment can prevent later stage cancer, mastectomy and of cancer in other organs and can save many lives.
