Masoud Pezeshkian Won The Iran’s Presidential Election

Reformist leader, Masoud Pezeshkian has defeated Saeed Jalili by more than 3 million votes.
Masoud Pezeshkian got 16.3 million votes while Saeed Jalii got 13.5 million votes. This was the second round of the election. In the first round, held on 28 June 2024, no candidate got the majority of more than 50% of total votes. Failing this, a run-off election between two candidates is held on July 5, 2024.

The election for the President in Iran is held every four years. The election was scheduled to be held in June 2025. But it was done in July 2024 due to the death of Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. Indian PM Modi congratulated Masoud Perkishan.

According to a Kremlin statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his hope that Pezeshkian’s election would lead to increased bilateral collaboration in all areas and simplify regional security and stability.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman expressed his desire to “develop and deepen the relations that bring together our two countries and peoples, and serve our common interests.”

Iran’s Political Structure

After the Iran revolution in 1979, the Supreme Leader held ultimate power. The Supreme leader of Iran is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He serves as head of the military and armed forces. He is head of the judiciary too. He is appointed by the panel of the elected clerical panel called the Assembly of Experts. Which can also be removed but that has not happened yet.

The President of Iran comes after the Supreme Leader. After the President, Vice President posts are there. But, the Supreme Leader is the final arbitrator in all matters of the country.

Who is Masoud Pezeskian

According to Wikipedia, Masoud Pezeskian, 69 years old, is a heart surgeon. He is a reformist lawmaker and served as Health Minister of Iran between 2001 to 2005. He has also been Deputy speaker from 2016 to 2020. The Guardian Council, led by the Supreme Leader, forbade him from the election in 2021.

He is known for his involvement in Mahsa Amini’s death, a young girl arrested for not following the Dress code and opposing hijab. She died in police custody. Pezeskskian demanded an assessment of the issue. He pledges to ease the headscarf rule. He is from the reformist faction.
